How much should you charge for UGC usage rights?
Start with your creation rate, then price the license by usage type, duration, territory, platforms, and account access. Avoid treating one percentage as a universal industry rate. Paid ads, creator-handle authorization, broad territory, long terms, exclusivity, and raw footage normally increase value.
Use a framework, not one magic percentage
Public creator advice often gives fixed percentages, but deals differ too much for one number to be reliable. A US$300 video used organically for 30 days is not equivalent to the same video run as a worldwide ad through the creator's account for one year.
UsageCue calculator method
The free calculator uses this educational starting model:
Estimated fee = creation rate × usage multiplier × duration multiplier × territory multiplier.
| Factor | Current calculator input |
|---|---|
| Usage | Organic 0.20×, paid ads 0.50×, whitelisting 0.75× |
| Duration | 30 days 1×, 90 days 1.8×, 180 days 2.6×, 365 days 4× |
| Territory | One country 1×, multiple countries 1.2×, worldwide 1.5× |
| Negotiation range | 80% to 125% of calculated target, rounded to US$10 |
These multipliers are a transparent UsageCue heuristic, not a survey claiming an industry standard. Adjust upward or negotiate separately for exclusivity, raw footage, broad edit rights, sublicensing, category conflicts, high media spend, or unusual production demands.
Worked examples
| Deal | Calculation | Starting target |
|---|---|---|
| US$300 base, paid ads, 90 days, one country | 300 × 0.50 × 1.8 × 1 | US$270 license fee |
| US$500 base, whitelisting, 180 days, multiple countries | 500 × 0.75 × 2.6 × 1.2 | US$1,170 license fee |
| US$400 base, organic, 365 days, worldwide | 400 × 0.20 × 4 × 1.5 | US$480 license fee |
Before sending a quote
- Separate creation work from licensing permission.
- Ask whether use is organic, paid, or through your account.
- Confirm platforms, territory, start date, and duration.
- Clarify edits, raw footage, exclusivity, and sublicensing.
- State extension price or renewal process in writing.
- Record expiry before delivering final files.
Methodology note
UsageCue publishes calculator multipliers so creators can challenge or replace them. Results are starting points, not price guarantees, legal advice, or claims about a universal market rate. Platform permissions can change; check current platform documentation and the signed agreement.
